Viability (of Our Government) in Question

With all the talk about the viability of automotive companies, no one is asking what the U.S. government is doing about its’ own viability. Is anyone demanding to see the government down-sizing plan?

Let’s right-size the government. After all, the government is only there to serve us, the citizens. We are being asked to live within our means and to act fiscally responsible.

Can we dare ask our government to act responsibly with our tax money and that of our children? What about the Federal departments that will be closing and buildings sold? Naturally, there would have to be commensurate reductions in personnel and budget appropriations. A broadbased viability plan would certainly include major concessions from the remaining civil service unions in the areas of compensation, health care and retirement benefits.

As a sign of good faith and fairness, drastic staff reductions would need to occur throughout all offices of the Senate and Congress. The elimination of private jet and limo services, boondoggle trips and a reduction in retirement and legislator health benefits, would be necessary.

Significant budget cut-backs across the board, would need to be mandated and monitored by private citizen committees with Cabinet Members being grilled in televised quarterly hearings.

To some, this all sounds so extreme. To others, it’s just politically impossible. To me, this only seems fair. If we had real leadership, this would be a balanced approach in protecting the future of our country.
